Why do I need attic insulation in the summer?

Insulation creates a barrier between the outside and the living space, keeping your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The walls and roof are, of course, major components of this exterior-interior barrier. But it’s just as important to address the division between the interior zones of the attic and the living space.
Why is that? Heat travels in 3 ways:
- From one surface to another facing surface (radiation)
- Between two surfaces in direct contact (conduction)
- With air flows (convection)
Since attics touch living spaces and your ceiling is not completely air-proof, heat can travel via all three of the above methods. If your attic is not properly insulated then you can experience high energy loss. This poses a challenge for your home and, at this time of year, your air conditioner!
Won’t insulation make my home hot in the summer?
No, insulation works to separate the inside from the outside, keeping your home cool in the summer and hot in the winter.
How much additional attic insulation are we talking about?
The answer depends on your specific home, but in many cases we’ll be placing additional attic insulation between and over floor joists and possibly the rafters. We’ll also look at the attic access door and, if present, knee wall studs. We’ll work directly with you on the assessment of your home, in order to develop the most efficient and cost-effective solution.
Your air conditioner works hard. Don’t let all that work and money go to waste. You can expect to see a drop in your energy bill by insulating your attic. This investment will continue to pay off every season, warm or cool, for the lifetime of your home.
