For Home Performance, The Attic is a Good Place to Start

Many Syracuse residents are doing everything they can in order to reduce the amount of electricity they use on a daily basis. While most people have their hearts in the right place, the strides they’re making aren’t always as effective as they’d like to think. LED bulbs and high-efficiency boilers can both be extremely useful when it comes to reducing costs, but the best place to start if this is a priority is the attic. In most cases, attics lack insulation, and Zerodraft can fix the problem.
The Importance of Attic Insulation
Most people understand that hot air rises, but when was the last time you thought about how this actually affects the principles of your home’s efficiency? If your attic isn’t properly insulated, the hot air that rises can quickly shoot right out of the top of the home, which results in a massive amount of heat loss. This is commonly referred to as “stack effect,” and it can become a problem in both new and old homes.
In essence, stack effect causes air infiltration. During the colder months of the year, warmer indoor air will rise up through the building and escape through either the windows or the top of the home, as well as any ventilation openings that might be present. Rising warm air reduces the amount of pressure in the base of the building, which draws cold air through open doors, windows and other areas that can result in leakage. The stack effect is then reversed during the cooling season, although it tends to be less of an issue when the air outside is warm.
